This site located in a historic urban center was originally the front yard of the Bank of Korea, established in 1950. The area surrounding the site is rich with complexity: it is adjacent to two historic buildings from the Japanese colonial period and also at the intersection of several major commercial districts. The site has a significant history, marked by various social, historic, and economic events that have been layered over time. Unfortunately, today the site is reduced to a disconnected traffic island, isolated by high-traffic roads on three sides, and its utilization is limited.

The fountain at the center of the site symbolizes the rapid growth and modernization of the industrial era, with its monumental and authoritarian appearance dominating the plaza.

In response, we propose “A Plaza with Many Circles.” Our goal is to create a non-hierarchical space that connects multiple local nodes, instead of focusing on a single central point. The plaza should not be designed as a dominant object, but rather as a backdrop to encourage citizen engagement. The existing fountain plaza has been disconnected from the surrounding historic context, and our new design aims to change this by offering new perspectives on the surrounding area. To achieve this, we have deconstructed the centrality of the existing fountain, creating multiple micro-plazas scattered throughout the site and connecting them in diverse ways. The result is an open field that represents decentralized values and offers a new perspective on the site’s rich history.

한국은행 앞 광장은, 조성시기부터 한국경제의 기초를 운영하는 한국은행의 앞마당에 해당하는 장소로 계획되었고 그 이후로 현재에 이르기까지 남대문시장, 신세계 · 롯데 백화점 본점, 명동 등 다양한 거대상권이 한 지점에서 맞닿은 서울의 핵심거점으로 변모해왔다. 이와 같은 사회적 경제적 맥락으로 인하여 이곳에는 한국 근 · 현대사의 굵직한 사건들, 건물들, 상징과 욕망의 켜들이 층층이 누적되어 있다.  그러나 안타깝게도 오늘날 한국은행 앞 분수광장은 그 다층적 가치를 담아내지 못하고 세 면이 모두 도로로 단절되어 이용이 매우 제한된 교통섬이 되었다. 이 장소의 구심점으로서 1930년대에 설치되고 여러 차례 변형되어왔던 원형 분수는 산업화시대 우리의 압축성장과 근대화를 상징하고 있으나, 기념비적이고 권위적인 모습으로 광장 위에 군림한다.

『다원광장』은 한 곳으로 수렴되는 위계적인 광장으로부터 다중의 장소로 확장되고 국지적으로 다양하게 연결되는 광장, 기념비적 대상이 되는 광장으로부터 참여와 경험의 배경이 되는 광장, 주변의 역사적 켜와 단절된 광장으로부터 주변을 새로운 시선으로 조망할 수 있는 광장으로의 변화를 모색한다. 이를 위해 기존 분수광장의 기념비적 중심성을 해체하여 부지에 다수의 마이크로 광장들을 분산시키고 이들을 다양한 연결조건 – 이격 · 중첩 · 침범 · 내포 등 – 을 통해 관계맺음으로써 탈중심적 가치를 담은 광장, 열려있는 장 field 로서의 광장이 되도록 한다.
