Reimagining an Unused Subway Station

영등포시장역 유휴공간활용 세부실행계획

Yeongdeungpo Market Station on Seoul Subway Line 5 is located in an area that was once a major hub for transportation and commerce in the city. The station was originally constructed as a transfer point for Line 10, part of Seoul’s third-phase subway expansion plan. However, when the Line 10 project was eventually canceled, the transfer platform within the station remained unused for an extended period, effectively turning into a “ghost station.”

Recently, as part of the Art on the Move Seoul initiative, various projects have been launched to transform subway stations—traditionally seen as everyday transit spaces—into places for cultural and artistic experiences. As part of this initiative, a detailed implementation plan has been developed to open the unused space within Yeongdeungpo Market Station to the public and repurpose it as a cultural and artistic platform.

과거 서울의 대표적 교통/상업거점 중 하나로써 역할을 해온 영등포시장 일대에는 지하철 5호선 영등포시장역이 위치한다. 이 지하철 역사는 서울시 3기 지하철 계획에 따른 10호선 환승역으로 조성되었으나, 3기 계획의 무산과 함께 역사 내의 환승 플랫폼은 장기간 ‘유령역’으로 방치되어 왔다.

최근 [서울 문화예술철도] 사업에 따라 ‘시민의 일상적 이동 공간’으로 사용되어온 지하철 역사를 ‘문화예술 경험 공간’으로 전환하는 다양한 사업이 진행되고 있으며, 그 일환으로 영등포 시장역의 유휴공간을 개방하여 시민이 이용할 수 있는 문화예술 플랫폼으로 활용하기 위한 세부실행계획을 수립하였다.
